Nowadays there are many different types of Yoga offered.

Some forms you see everywhere and sometimes you find a Yoga form that someone invented himself within a Yoga studio. We would like to give you an overview of the different types of Yoga we offer at the BYOU app and what each form entails.

It can also be that you have been practicing a certain Yoga form for years, which you like. Then one day you walk into another studio for the same form of Yoga and it can suddenly feel very different. Within Yoga, there are different forms, but each teacher gives his or her twist on teaching. From their own experience, training, or belief. All Yoga forms have their benefits and goals. So you can tailor your yoga class to what you need. In each Yoga form, the connection with the breath is central. Your movements are linked to the breath and in every pose, you want to keep breathing deeply.

The different yoga forms

Hatha Yoga

Hatha is considered the foundation of Yoga. In Hatha Yoga, there are standing, lying, or sitting postures. These are often offered as single postures, with a beginning and an end. Sometimes the postures are offered in a particular series, sometimes static or dynamic.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic form of Yoga. In this form, the postures follow each other fairly quickly, connected by breathing. It is a fairly active class, with many creative flows.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is also a very active form of Yoga. Ujjayi breathing leads this practice.
Ashtanga yoga consists of a fixed series of postures, which are always the same. Each posture is a preparation for the next posture.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is a passive form of Yoga. In Yin Yoga, sitting or lying postures are held for 3 - 5 minutes, sometimes even longer.

In Yin Yoga, gravity helps your body relax. This is how you get to the deeper connective tissues and create space at the joints. You use a lot of props in this process.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is gaining notoriety. It is also known as sleep yoga. Yoga Nidra helps to de-stress and relax deeply.

Yoga Nidra works on a deeper level. It puts you in a phase between sleeping and being awake. This is how you achieve complete relaxation.

Bikram Yoga

This form is also known as "hot" Yoga. You practice this Yoga in a heated room. There are 26 set postures in this class.

Because it is so warm, your muscles can relax earlier and so you can work on your flexibility.

Power Yoga

This is another very intensive form of Yoga. In Power Yoga, intense poses are held longer. This way you can work on becoming physically fitter during a Yoga class.

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga is yet another form. In this form of Yoga, much use is made of Mantras, Chanting, and fire breathing.

The movements are often very dynamic and related to the rhythm of breathing. The purpose of this form of Yoga is to "awaken" the Kundalini energy, which rests at our tailbone.

So many choices at the BYOU app, from so many variations!

As you may already see, there is an enormous amount of choice! Of course, in each class, you work on a connection between breathing and the body. And you bring your attention inward and observe what is going on inside of you.

And maybe you notice that in one period you need a lot of Power Yoga and then another period with a lot of Yin Yoga.

That is the beauty of Yoga, there is always a form that suits you and your needs.

A suitable yoga mat for every style of yoga!

When getting started with a new yoga form, it is important to use a yoga mat that fits your yoga goals. In a quiet yoga form such as yin, for example, a comfortable thick yoga mat is pleasant to use, while in a more dynamic form such as Ashtanga the preference is for a thin yoga mat that offers more stability.

In the assortment of one of our amazing Yoga teachers, you will find many yoga mats with different properties. So you are guaranteed to find a mat that suits you!
