How does stress affect the body?

Stress is not only a feeling. It is a full body event with hormones, blood flow, muscle tone and digestion all involved. That is why people who say they are handling it fine still end up with headaches, a bad stomach and three in the morning wake ups.
This guide explains what happens in your body during stress, what cortisol actually does, the physical symptoms chronic stress produces system by system, and what genuinely helps your body recover.
What happens in the first sixty seconds
Your brain registers a threat, real or anticipated, and two systems switch on.
- The sympathetic nervous system. Adrenaline within seconds. Heart rate up, blood pressure up, breathing faster and shallower, pupils wider, blood redirected to large muscles, digestion paused.
- The HPA axis. A slower hormonal chain ending in cortisol from the adrenal glands, released over minutes. Cortisol frees up glucose, sharpens attention and modulates inflammation.
This is a brilliant system for a short, physical threat. The problem is that a hostile email, a deadline and a difficult relationship all trigger the same machinery, and none of them end with a sprint.
What cortisol actually does
Cortisol is not a villain. You need it. It follows a daily curve: a sharp rise in the thirty to forty five minutes after waking, then a gradual fall through the day to a low at night. That curve is what makes you alert in the morning and sleepy at night.
Chronic stress flattens or shifts the curve. The morning rise weakens, so you wake unrefreshed. Evening levels stay higher, so you feel wired at bedtime and alert at three in the morning. This is why so many people describe themselves as tired but unable to switch off.

Sleep

Muscles and pain
Sustained tension in jaw, neck, shoulders and lower back. Tension headaches, teeth grinding, restricted breathing because the ribcage never fully relaxes. Pain then feeds more stress, which is why gentle movement often beats rest.
Digestion

Heart and blood pressure
Higher resting heart rate, higher blood pressure, more inflammation. Over years this is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, which is why chronic stress is treated as a medical issue rather than a personality trait.
Immune system
Short bursts of stress can sharpen immune response. Sustained stress suppresses it. More frequent infections, slower healing and stronger inflammatory flare ups are the common pattern.
Skin and hair
Acne, eczema and psoriasis often flare under load. Hair shedding, known as telogen effluvium, typically appears two to three months after a major stressor and usually recovers.
Brain and memory
Attention narrows, working memory suffers, and decision making shifts towards short term relief. This is a physiological effect of the state you are in, not a sign that you have become worse at your job.
Hormones and cycle
Chronic stress can disrupt menstrual cycles, reduce libido and interact with thyroid and blood sugar regulation. If your cycle has changed noticeably, that is worth raising with a clinician.
What actually helps your body recover
- Regular sleep and wake times. The single most effective way to restore the cortisol curve.
- Daylight within an hour of waking. Ten to fifteen minutes anchors the rhythm.
- Movement that finishes the stress response. A brisk twenty minute walk most days, plus strength work twice a week. Avoid making training another source of overload.
- Slow breathing with a longer exhale. Four in, six to eight out, a few minutes daily. It directly increases parasympathetic activity.
- Protein at breakfast and regular meals. Blood sugar dips are physically indistinguishable from anxiety.
- Less alcohol and no late caffeine. Both look like relief and both fragment sleep.
- Real connection. Face to face contact measurably reduces the stress response.

When to see a doctor
Get chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, unexplained weight loss or persistent gut changes checked medically before attributing anything to stress. Stress explains a lot, and it should never be the first assumption for a new physical symptom.
